Piquant Post- our review of their subscription spice box

Have you ever found yourself staring into the fridge and having no idea at all what you are going to make? For me, it is a regular occurrence. Sometimes I just don’t have the time or energy to go to the grocery store, other times I feel like I lack the creativity to come up with something new. Maybe I just need a new spice?

My family menu is made up of few repeats.  We don’t like to see the same meals served over and over. I tried that when the kids were little, we would have take out nights, pizza nights, etc.  However, after a few months, none of us wanted to look at the same thing again.

This is why I love subscription boxes; there is always a new idea, thought up by someone else.

 

This month the great people over at Piquant Post sent us their box of goodies to check out.  I loved it so much that I’ve been excited to make new dishes and try to find other ways to use the leftover spices.

Here’s what came in my box:

Spice Blends:

  1. Mexican Adobo

Packed with dried chili peppers and essential Mexican ingredients this adobo spice blend made an excellent marinade for tofu tacos with mixed veggies. I love the deep red colors, and the cinnamon was a bold choice.

Mexican Adobo blend contains ancho chili peppers,  coriander,  cumin,  fennel seed,  mustard,  black pepper, paprika, Mexican oregano, and cinnamon.

  1. Chipotle Spice

I had no ideas that Chipotle peppers are jalapeño peppers. Did you?  They are dried and smoked jalapeños! I love this new fact that I learned on their blog. Most days, I didn’t follow the recipe for using this blend.  I used it for a great Mexican rice dish with corn, tomatoes, onions, and beans.  It was SO good!

This blend contains chipotle chili, paprika, onion powder, garlic powder, sage, cumin, Mexican oregano, marjoram, porcini powder, and black pepper.

  1. Taco Elixir

I have been trying to watch my salt intake, and I loved that this blend had a great taste without the heavy salt and preservatives. We made healthy fajitas and tacos, and I didn’t miss the salt! We even sprinkled it over air-fried tater tots!

Contains: guajillo chili, ancho chili, cumin, smoked paprika, garlic powder, Mexican oregano, coriander, allspice, cloves, and cayenne pepper.

  1. Mexican Mole

I wasn’t super crazy about Mole before. The classic mole sauce isn’t my favorite.  However, with a few tweaks, this made a great enchilada sauce!

Contains: ancho chili, pasilla chili, cocoa powder, white sesame seed, chipotle, cinnamon, cloves, Mexican oregano, cumin, coriander, black pepper, and paprika.

1. Adobo Whole-Roasted Chicken

2. Chipotle Pork & Butternut Squash Chili

3. Perfect Beef Tacos – We made vegetarian tacos

4. Chicken Mole Poblano – We made cheese enchiladas

So these boxes are very nice and I loved ours so much that we ordered a subscription for our son and his lovely girlfriend to try. They have been learning how to cook at home and loved trying to the new recipes.
