Tips and Tricks To Freshen Your Front Yard Spring can make for a pretty but slightly shaggy-looking landscape as the flora revives. Here are some tips and tricks to freshen your front yard. Your front yard is the public face of your home. You work to make it look pretty, keep it eco-friendly, and encourage beneficial plants and pollinators. But even well-cared-for front yards can look tired or shaggy after a few years of the same blooms or runaway perennials. Learn some tips and tricks to freshen your front yard. Reduce Lawn Area Consider reducing the area of grass in your front yard. Mark out new garden beds that can accommodate native plants and pollinator gardens to add diversity to your landscape. Lawns consume a lot of water and don’t provide much in the way of habitat for the friendly bees that are so important to ecosystems, even small ones like front yards. Mulch Keep weeds in check with organic mulch. Many communities now offer mulch for residents made from discarded Christmas trees. Other landscape suppliers specialize in producing organic soils and mulches for eco-conscious gardeners. While mulch can make your front yard look tidy, don’t make the mistake of “volcano” mulching around your trees. Mulch piled up against the base of trees holds moisture against the bark, which can cause rot, fungus growth, and unhealthy root formation. Mulch in the rain shadow of your trees, but leave the base of the tree bare. Use Container Gardens and Garden Art A quick way to add color and interest to your front yard is to use container gardens. You can place attractive planters of different heights and sizes around your front entryway or even plant various annuals in garden beds to add interest and beauty to your front yard. Planters themselves can be works of art in your garden. Select pieces that express your personality, echo the style of your home’s architecture, or just delight you. You could also add a tasteful, inexpensive statue, birdbath, or fountain to freshen your front yard. Dress Up Your Mailbox Your mailbox is often the first part of your property that passersby and visitors encounter. If your local post office doesn’t object, try growing a clematis vine up your mailbox post. Create a low raised bed around the base of your mailbox that features flowering plants and decorative grasses of varying heights to add interest to the entrance to your driveway. Or, use a decorative mailbox cover to add some color and personality to your mailbox (but check again with your local post office to make sure you stay in their good graces!) Add a Garden Arch or Gate You don’t necessarily need a walkway to install a garden arch—just use an arch to mark one area of your garden as a special retreat. Add a bench to sit and enjoy a climbing rose you’ve planted to grow up and over the arch. If you do have a front walk, consider adding a charming gate to mark the entrance, and plant evergreens on either side of it to set off your walk. Over the next few years, you can create lovely borders along your walk, which will take the place of boring grass and won’t need mowing! You’re sure to think of more creative ways to freshen your front yard and maintain your public-facing landscape to look charming and abundant. It won’t be long before neighbors make a point of driving by to look or guests take notice and give you compliments on your refreshed front yard.

Essential Supplies You Need To Start Quilting Description : All hobbies require specific supplies, especially quilting! Let’s look at some essential supplies you need to start quilting so you can start off strong. Content : Quilting is a fun pastime for many people, especially those who enjoy working with their hands and creating beautiful works of art. Quilting refers to combining three layers of fabric manually with a needle and thread or a sewing machine. Many quilts contain lovely designs that are inspiring and often make us want to create even more! So if you’re interested in becoming a novice quilter, let’s discuss some of the essential supplies you need to start quilting. Rotary Cutter The rotary cutter is a funky little tool that looks similar to a pizza cutter and is an essential item you’ll need to start your quilting journey. A rotary cutter can help you cut fabric accurately and quickly, making the process easier and more efficient for you. Many people confuse rotary cutters with standard scissors, but there are some significant differences! Rotary cutters specialize in cutting long, straight lines on the fabric. You can still use scissors, but they work best for projects that require fine and curvy details. High-Quality Thread This one may be a given, but you’ll need a thread that consists of high-quality material to ensure you don’t waste your efforts! You can start with any color you’d like, but try to aim for a 50wt cotton thread (this will vary with each brand). Keep in mind that different thread weights suit different stages of the quilting process, so be sure to choose carefully. Ruler/Pins/Seam Ripper The ruler, pins, and seam ripper should also be on your shopping list. These basic items are great for any fabric project, so be sure to pick them up! You’ll want to purchase an acrylic quilting ruler for this hobby because they’re clear (perfect for different-colored fabrics) and don’t slip on the material. As for your pins, you’ll want to find a good keeping place for them in your hobby area to ensure they don’t get lost. You’ll need them to hold the different layers together to quilt them in place properly. And, of course, any quilter from beginner-expert needs a seam ripper because everybody makes mistakes! Cutting Mat Most cutting mats will contain specific markings that enable you to measure your fabric accurately, so you have to cut only once. Having a cutting mat in place will also protect your table from cuts! A self-healing cutting mat will even “absorb” different cuts and keep the blade sharp. Marking Tool Be sure to find a quality marking pen/marker that will help you write on different fabrics for measurement without leaving a permanent stain. Marking tools are among the most basic equipment all quilters need in their area. Once you make your first masterpiece, you’ll want to ensure your quilt lasts for years, so be sure to take good care of it! Purchase the above essential supplies you need to start quilting to ensure your first project is as excellent as it can be!

Considerations for Flying with Pets Taking a trip on an airplane can be highly stressful on pets, but there are some things you can do at home to prepare them. Check online to see if there will be certain security protocols for pets. If so, teach your pet to get in and out of their crate without running off. Also, double-check their crate to see if it is the right size and that it’s not falling apart. Put your pet in the crate for extended periods of time beforehand to get them ready for a long flight. It would be wise to pack a carry-on for your pet too. Fill it with empty water bottles for hydration, small containers of their food, and any medication that they require so if your flight is delayed or one of your bags is lost, you at least have the basics to take care of your pet. You should also include a toy or two for them to play with or comfort them with a familiar smell. Consider booking your flight for a less busy day of travel. There are usually days that are extraordinarily busy for air travel around the holidays, and you want to avoid those days if you can. Consider taking an extra day off from work, as flying on a less crowded plane will reduce stress on you and your pet. How to Drive with Pets If you choose to drive for your trip, you need to have your pet in a harness. A safety harness acts as a seatbelt for them and will keep them secure in case of an accident. It will also keep them isolated in one area of the car. It’s highly dangerous to have your pet moving around the vehicle as you’re driving as it can distract you and cause an incident. Take some time to map out some pit stops during your drive too. Although you may go a few hours without a bathroom break, the same cannot be said for your companions. This stop can also double as a chance for them to stretch their legs too. It’s better to plot your spots ahead of time rather than ending up at a place where you don’t feel safe or are not pet-friendly. Consider how you’ll pack your vehicle too. You might feel like you need to pack everything, but editing what you bring will give your animal more room. Giving them a comfortable place to lay down or safely move around will reduce their stress and allow them to feel relaxed. Have a Backup Plan In the event that you have to travel without your pet, create a plan for their care. Look into boarding them or finding a pet sitter. You don’t want to just dump them with someone though, make sure you check-in and can trust who will be taking care of them. Visit the place you’ve selected for your pet to stay to see if they have proper accommodations and are up to your standards. Look at reviews from past users to see if there were any problems with their stay. Set up a time for the boarding house director to meet your pet and see how they interact with one another, and that both are comfortable with each other. The same goes for a pet sitter. Even though your pet might be staying at home in this instance, make sure the person watching them knows where everything is and what routines your pets follow. That way, there won’t be any surprises. Traveling for the holidays is an exciting time. However, when you travel with your pets, there’s some extra work you need to do. By following the tips mentioned above you can make the trip a low-stress experience for everyone involved with it, and make your pets happy during the holidays.
