This DIY Pumpkin Lightbox is an easy project if you are just getting started in papercrafting. It doesn't require a lot of layers and it's easy to put together.

What Do I Need To Make This DIY Pumpkin Lightbox?

I cut all of the paper using my Cricut machine.  It was very easy and I found the pumpkin right in the Design Space software. However, if you don't have a Cricut, you can cut all of the pieces by hand and draw out the pumpkin design with a sharpie on vellum paper.

You will also need a deep frame.  I actually removed the canvas from another piece of art, and used the inside framework for this project.

DIY Pumpkin Lightbox Materials

  • 1 Sheet of 8.5×11 Black Cardstock
  • 1 Sheet of 8.5×11 Orange Cardstock
  • 1 Sheet of 8.5×11 Yellow Cardstock
  • 1 Sheet of 8.5×11 Clear Vellum
  • 1 set of multicolor Fairy Lights
  • Paper crafting glue – I used Elmer's Craft Bond tape runner. But I also added a few dots of glue.
  • Toothpick ( optional – it's great for spreading the glue )
  • Picture frame or shadowbox
  • Black Paint for frame.

When you remove the canvas from most basic artist canvases, there is a usable frame inside!  Carefully remove the canvas and the staples and paint with whatever color paint you want for your project.

  • First, measure the inside of your frame and cut your paper squares to fit on the frame.
  • If you are cutting with a Cricut, start a new project in Design Space.  You will need 3 squares measuring 7.5 x 7.5.
  • My frame was 8 x 8 so I cut my squares 7.5 by 7.5 so they fit just inside the line of my frame. I changed the colors to white for the vellum layer, orange, and yellow for the back layer.
  • You will also need a pumpkin SVG file.  There are so many cute ones in Design Space. I love this mandala pumpkin design.

If you are cutting out with another machine OR drawing the pumpkin freehand, just make sure that you cut out the outline on the orange layer.
  • You will need to take your pumpkin image and make a duplicate that you will place over the orange square.  Click both of the image and the square and SLICE the orange square.  Remove the sliced pieces and you will have the outside of your pumpkin design.

The Layers

The first layer you need to start with is the orange.  Carefully glue the black pumpkin cutout right over the outline. Flip it over and glue the clear vellum to the back of the orange paper.  Then glue these papers to the front of the frame.  Allow the glue to dry for a few minutes.

Turn it over, insert your fairy lights into the back of the frame.  Cut a small slit in the corner of the yellow paper for your wire to come out.  And glue the yellow paper to the back of the frame.

Show Us Your Finished Project!

I loved making this Pumpkin Lightbox.  The hardest part is actually weeding the black paper pumpkin!  It's a little time-consuming, but I love weeding and listing to music or an audiobook.  I'm still fairly new to crafting with the Cricut Maker 3, but I'm so in love with this machine and all that I've been making with it.

I'm excited to show you more fun projects we've been making. You can find some of our projects on our Instagram feed and I would love it if you tag us, Dancing.Fireflies on Instagram when you upload your project so we can see them!
