How To Craft Your Customized Dog Collar

Have you ever considered using your crafting skills to create your pet's collar? In this article, we'll share the best benefits of designing your dog's collar and how to make one for your best friend.

Your dog is a valued member of your family, so why shouldn't they have a personalized collar? Customized collars can help your furry friends express their personalities while you flex your crafting skills.

It's More Secure

When you take your dog on walks or trips in the car, you rely on their collar to help you safely transport your dog back and forth.

Standard store collars can often be difficult to adjust or come in limited sizes. When these collars fail to stay fastened around a dog's neck or slip off, your dog could get loose and run away.

One of the best benefits of personalizing your dog's collar is the ability to ensure your collar fits your dog securely. Regardless of how big or small your dog might be, you'll have a snug collar ready to keep them safe on their next walk.

It's Great for Bonding

Dogs that have previously stayed in foster homes, shelters, or even pet stores often have intense anxiety when they are first adopted.

Designing a collar for your dog is an excellent activity to help you bond with your new pet and naturally become comfortable around each other. In fact, there are plenty of crafts you can make with pets that could ease their anxiety and build trust.

How To Craft Your Customized Dog Collar

Want to personalize your dog’s collar but aren’t sure where to start or what supplies you’ll need? Follow our directions below on how to create your very own customized dog collar.

Supplies Needed

  • Nylon strap
  • Buckle
  • Tri-glide
  • D-ring
  • Collar fabric

Directions

  1. First, lay the nylon strap next to your dog’s old collar. Next, measure your nylon strap to be double the length of the old collar and cut the material.
  2. Cut your collar fabric three inches wide. Cut the length of your fabric to match the measurements of your nylon strap.
  3. Fold the top and bottom of your fabric inward by one inch. Once you have folded both ends toward the middle, iron your fabric to press the fabric.
  4. Next, place the nylon strap in the middle of the fabric and fold over the top and bottom folds until the strap is covered. Sew these two materials together with a sewing machine.
  5. Place the tri-glide in the middle of the collar.
  6. Pull your collar materials over the pronged side of your buckle.
  7. Slide your D-ring through the other side of your collar. Then, add the other side of your buckle to the collar by pulling the material through the bottom slot.
  8. Sew two small seams near the ends of each buckle.
  9. Adjust the buckles to your pet’s measurements.

Once you customize your pet's collar, you'll have an accessory for them to wear on any occasion.
