CBD (which stands for cannabidiol) is exploding in popularity in recent years. In fact, according to a Gallup poll, 14% of Americans say that they use a CBD product of some kind. But what are people using CBD for? Well, CBD has shown promise when it comes to offering a variety of different health benefits.

It can help with seizures, can assist in treating chronic pain and has even been shown to help those who suffer from anxiety or insomnia. Of course, the use of CBD is still quite new, so more research is being done all the time to discover new uses and make sure it is effective.

However, despite the many benefits it can offer people, CBD is still taboo throughout American society in many cases. This is because it is a component of marijuana. Many believe it is no different than marijuana (which it is) and lump the two together often.

With that in mind, this article is going to look at some of the taboos, misconceptions and myths surrounding CBD, and the actual truth.

CBD Gets You High

The biggest taboo or misconception surrounding CBD is that it gets you high. While it is a component of marijuana, it isn’t the part that gives you the “high” feeling (that would be THC). As a result, CBD will not get you high if consumed on its own. While sure, you can consume CBD in many similar ways to marijuana like smoking it, eating it or using CBD tinctures and drops, the CBD will not give the same psychoactive effects.

However, it is important to remember that some CBD products do have small amounts of THC  in them, but it will hardly be noticeable at all. If you need to pass drug tests for work or don’t want any THC in your system at all, be sure to only use CBD products that have been tested and shown to have 0% THC in them.

It is Illegal and You Will Be Arrested if You Have it

The legality of CBD is another taboo or myth. While some people think it is just as illegal as marijuana itself, that’s not the case. It is legal in most of the 50 states, but there are some restrictions in place. For example, some might allow the purchase for everyone, while others will allow only those with a prescription to buy. It can also depend on whether the CBD comes from a hemp plant or not.

Despite this legal grey area, CBD is readily available to find and buy in most states across the country. While the federal government still treats CBD on the same level as marijuana, they hardly ever enforce it. As long as you abide by the laws and restrictions in your state, you should be fine. 

So do some research and learn what is allowed and not allowed when it comes to CBD. Of course, if you are using CBD while traveling, it is a good idea to familiarize yourself with the legality and rules of the destination you are traveling to.

If You Use CBD, You’ll Get Addicted

Another misconception about CBD is that once you start using it, you will become addicted. Thankfully, this isn’t the case. Tests have shown that CBD shows no signals of abuse liability and thus is not thought to be addictive at all at this point. In no way should an individual develop a dependency to a product that includes CBD oil (unless it also includes some other type of addictive substance).

So while CBD itself isn’t physically addictive, they can help your serotonin and dopamine levels, which can make you feel pretty great. This can make you want to use the product more, sure, but that doesn’t constitute an addiction. And if this person were to stop using the products, they wouldn’t start to exhibit the common signs of withdrawal like someone quitting heroin or alcohol might.

Like THC, You Can Feel the CBD Working Within Hours

When an individual consumes THC in some capacity, they will generally feel “high” within an hour or so and the feeling could continue for a while. As a result, many people think the same is true for CBD. However, that is not the fact. You often won’t be able to “feel” CBD work immediately, and it can potentially take some time for the health benefits to be realized.

When using CBD or any type of medication for that matter, it is important to remember that they are not magic. They take time to operate and they aren’t 100% proven to work for every person in every case. Also, if you don’t have any ailments, but take CBD in hopes of feeling something, you aren’t likely to experience any changes at all.
