How many of your made health goals at the beginning of the year? I know we did! This is the year that we are focused on achieving milestones and crossing finish lines!

As we settle into the second month of 2020, it’s time to ask yourself how the beginning of the new decade is shaping up for you. Are you excited and feeling confident about the path ahead, or are you looking back at the plans you set out for yourself and wondering where you fell short?

No matter where you are in your journey toward personal greatness, it’s important to remember that it’s never too late to start running towards your goals, and you don’t need a January 1st start date to do so! If you’re looking for that extra push, here are a few helpful tips to get you (back) on track.

2020 Goals

Get specific and plan it out

 If you’re struggling to reach your goals, there’s a good chance that the goals you’ve set are too vague. Or, maybe you’ve set a great goal, but haven’t developed a step-by-step action plan that will get you there. So, get specific about what you want to achieve! If your goal is to lose weight, first decide how much you would like to lose and by when. Many find it beneficial to take a big goal (20 lbs) and break it up into smaller, more realistic goals that are easier to attain (5lbs per month for 4 months).

Once you’ve got your plan mapped out, go into detail about what you’re going to do to achieve each milestone. Maybe your first step is to sign up for a weight loss program with a personal coach to help keep you accountable and on the right track! Or, it may be beneficial to find a walking buddy that you can do laps around your office or neighborhood with every day. When working towards a goal, it helps to not have to go it alone– accountability is key! Once you’ve developed a routine with one new habit, tack on another that will bring you closer to your goal.

Put it in your calendar

 Setting a specific goal is the first step in the right direction, but it can only get you so far if you’re not intentional about it. Oftentimes, we find that we get ourselves all set up to reach a goal, but then we let everyday life get in the way. Using the weight loss example, signing up for a weight loss program won’t do much if you don’t make the effort to grocery shop and plan your meals ahead of time. Just as deciding to exercise every day, for instance, won’t move you towards your goal if you aren’t consistent about it.

Sometimes a visual reminder is just the trick we need to keep the momentum going. Put these critical goal-reaching tasks on your calendar and do your best to not break that appointment with yourself. That work task or a load of laundry will still be there after you get up to take a walk around the block. Learn to make yourself and your goals a priority.

If traditional calendars and planners don’t work for you, try downloading a goal-setting app to track your progress each day. There are ample ways to keep yourself motivated if you simply take the extra initiative to do so.

Believe in yourself

 No goal will come to fruition if you are more doubtful than hopeful. The strategies listed above will not work if you don’t believe in yourself and trust that you are capable of achieving anything you set your mind to. Truly believing in yourself takes practice, and you may not get it right on your first try. If you find that you’ve gotten off track, be gentle and understanding with yourself and try again.

Have you ever heard the saying, “fall down seven times, stand up eight?” It doesn’t matter how many times you “fall,” what matters is how many times you decide to get back up. Though you may come to a point where you feel like you’ve failed, realize that even still, you’re closer to your goal now than when you started. You’ve gained insight that you didn’t have before you got here. Now get back up, apply what you’ve learned, and keep moving forward!

No matter where you are in the process of reaching your goals, welcome February with open arms and remember that each day is a new opportunity to continue forward. Once you’ve reached your goal, you may just find that the journey was more rewarding than achieving the actual goal itself!
