Banana bread is a house staple in our kitchen. We have been using the same easy moist banana bread recipe since my boys were toddlers. Today my oldest turned 29!
I love making sweet breads, using up ingredients that might be almost over-ripened. I hate throwing out food. Bananas have a weird shelf life. It seems like they are a little green one day, the next they are mushy and dark.
That's when it's Banana bread time!
You can even make banana bread and toss it in the freezer for later! Just make sure it has cooled completely before bagging it up in a freezer-safe bag.
My kitchen is the place where everyone gathers to talk, vent, and create. So I always have some treat available for those times. I love coming around the corner and seeing everyone standing at the island talking about their lives. It's a great feeling!
My daughter is a barista at a popular coffee house and she always brings home the spotty bananas for me to make bread with.
This week we posted a photo on Instagram of our Banana Bread and so many of you asked us for the recipe. Today, we have that recipe for you!
What Is Banana Bread?
What do to with those dark ripe bananas? Make a sweet easy bread of course!
Banana bread is easy to throw together, fun to customize, and it doesn't take a lot of complicated ingredients.
This recipe makes a sweet moist bread that's perfect at any time of the day.
This Is Our Family Recipe
Our kids grew up with this recipe, and it was passed down to me from my Great-Grandmother's Kitchen. We always have bananas on hand to snack on. But as everyone knows, bananas turn brown fast! So this is how we take them to the next level.
Banana Bread Muffins
Before we jump into the recipe, you should know that you can easily make banana bread muffins with the same recipe. You just need to reduce the cooking time a little bit.
Banana bread muffins are a great way to have a healthy snack on the go or to toss in for lunch!
Muffins take a lot less time to bake. You only need 30 minutes of baking time.
You will want to pour the batter into a muffin pan with liners. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes and then check with a toothpick in the center of one of your muffins. You want it to come out clean. If it isn't done, just stick in for 5 more minutes.
Banana bread Mix-Ins!
I like to add different things to our bread from time to time. Here are a few of our favorite Mix-Ins:
- 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 1 cup peanut butter
- 1 cup dried cranberries
- 1 cup chopped walnuts or pecans
- 1tsp Nutmeg
- 1tsp cinnamon
- 1 tsp vanilla
- Brown Sugar and White Sugar
- Baking Soda
- Optional – Walnuts, Pecans, Chocolate Chips, etc

What makes this banana bread recipe so moist?
There are a few reasons banana bread is moist and sweet. But mostly it comes down to how ripe the bananas are. Very ripe bananas will make the bread sweeter and moister.
We use a blend of white sugar and brown because brown sugar adds even more moisture and it can also make it a little too dense. So the white sugar lightens it up.
Try not to overmix your batter. I've had some loaves come out just a little too squishy when I overmix.
