Dark green, grassy, and just a hint of something familiar, we gave CannaTrust’s Hemp Extracts a try this week, and we learned so much about hemp and whole plant extracts. Thanks to CannaTrust for sending us their dietary supplements for us to review for you!
What is Hemp Extract?
Hemp extract is made from agricultural hemp. The extract is made from the seeds and stalks from the hemp plant. It is legal in all 50 states as a food or dietary supplement.
The difference between “Hemp Extract” and “CBD” is hemp extract contains the full plant profile, whereas CBD is a single molecule
It is basically what it sounds like, the extract of the hemp plant that contains CBD compounds, fatty acids, waxes, chlorophyll, minerals, fatty acids, terpenes, flavonoids, and other materials that are extracted from the hemp plant. We have more information HERE.
But what does it smell and taste like?
I want to be honest about this. It was pretty earthy. I mean, when I opened the bottle, it smells like weed! 😀 When I was trying to take some photos, I dropped some on my hand, and I’ve been smelling weedy all day. But, I don’t mind that either.
It is suggested that you add a few drops under your tongue and hold it for 30-60 seconds. But I really couldn’t hold it that long. So I tried a few drops, then added it to juice. This week I also added it to smoothies and my daily water bottle.
What’s with the taste? The darker green color and smell is from the cold pressed organic hemp seed oil, and their own proprietary blend of full spectrum hemp extract and steam distilled terpenes. It’s supposed to taste like that!
I actually rubbed it into my hands, and my aching joints are feeling pretty good right now! 😀 However, I don’t think it is supposed to be topical use because it is very green and that color lingers. But the hemp oil feels very good on my dry skin and soaked in nicely and I didn’t see much of a green tint. So experiment! This might be great as a bath soak too. I am always looking to try new ways to include hemp and cbd into my daily routine.
The taste is pretty potent. I tried the 1500mg plain oil, and it was very green. I wish I had a better word, but it does have a green grassy taste. They also have a peppermint flavor that does negotiate the flavor. And if you just can’t handle the taste, can add it to capsules that you can fill on your own.
I highly suggest mixing it in with your morning smoothie or juice. It just helps to make it go down a little better. We have added our recipes at the bottom for our Happy Hemp Smoothies.
CannaTrust starts with agricultural hemp grown at their partner's organic farm in Holland. Why Holland? Their grower in Holland has a very high-quality product which they sourced before the 2018 farm bill passed.
Their farming methods use no pesticides, heavy metals or chemicals. CannaTrust uses a CO2 Supercritical extraction process that yields a pure, phytonutrient-rich oil that's high in cannabinoids, omega 3-6-9, flavonoids, antioxidants beneficial lipids and terpenes. The extract is then blended with cold pressed organic hemp seed oil for nutritional benefits.
Is CannaTrust Organic?
Yes, and they are also raw, vegan, gluten-free, Non-GMO, soy free, free of sugars, artificial coloring, and artificial flavoring.
Everyone has a different reaction to CBD and Hemp oils. For some people, it is a smooth calming feeling. Some have reported feeling tired and ready for sleep. And others love the pain relief and have a mood lift, so they are ready to face the world.
I’ve been dealing with some sinus pressure headaches for the last month, so this actually did help to relieve some of that pressure in my head and shoulders. It also seem to have given me some energy to get some work done this week.
Since it works differently for everyone, I always suggest starting off very light and working your way up to where you feel good without feeling drowsy. For oils and tinctures, I always start with one or two drops and see how I feel. I can always go up and add more. But you need to listen to your body and adjust to your needs. I want to remind you that we are not giving out medical advice, just our suggestions for use.
Hemp Extract VS Full-Spectrum CBD Oil
I learned something new with this product, and I’m glad that I did.
I’ve been taking Full-Spectrum CBD oils for a long time. I’ve had it with and without THC. I don’t care for the CBD with THC for daytime use because it always leaves me a little light headed. And for anyone with anxiety issues, THC can trigger a panic attack. So I like to stay away from THC.
When CannaTrust sent us their samples, I wasn’t sure how I was going to like it. The box didn’t say CBD and I wasn’t sure if it was anything except hemp flavored oil.
Apparently, The reason why they don’t use CBD on the packaging is that they currently only sell on Amazon, and the term CBD is presently not allowed. ( Lame! ) Instead of CBD, CannaTrust uses the term “Full Spectrum Hemp Extract” which means the product has the full plant profile, including CBD.
But I gave it a try anyways to see how it went. I was surprised to say that it works pretty well.
Things to know
Buyers Beware: Hemp seed oil is NOT Hemp Extract. Hemp seed does only contains a trace amount of cannabinoids. If you are looking for the CBD effect, you want full spectrum hemp extract.
The taste is strong, so go with it! It’s power smoothie time! This year we are all about making the extra effort to be healthier and happier.
