Located just blocks from the famous Pike’s Market in Seattle, Washington, Von’s Gusto bistro is a local favorite. We can take our friends who are vegetarian, pescatarian and carnivore and everyone finds something great to order. It is a great pub with fun ambiance for hanging out, trying the hourly drink specials from the drink spin wheel, and eating too much food. The place can get busy, so call ahead for reservations. Yet it is far less busy than other over-priced hot spots down the street and much friendlier without the snooty attitudes. During the summer months, you can enjoy sitting outside and people watching on the patio.

The servicers are quick to suggest options or talk to you about the menu and options. For vegetarians, substitutions are available and easily made. The servicers can be a bit slow and not super attentive. But also they aren’t in your face annoying. The food comes out immediately while it is hot. And you can always call over one of the passing wait staff for help. But that is one of my few negatives about the place. The prices are reasonable. ($11-30)

The bar is HUGE! The drink specials are cheap and the drink menu ranges from mixed to specialty.

Parking because Von’s is located downtown parking is difficult. There are plenty of parking garages close by.

Let’s talk about the food!

I love to find good comfort food when I am traveling or out for dinner. Vons not only does it right, but does it in a way that you want to keep coming back.  From fresh house made pastas to incredible savory sourdough pizzas.

Von's Gustrombistro - Seattle Washington ReviewI suggest that you always start off with the appetizers. They are a great way to start off the meal.  The freshly roasted peanuts are the right mix of crisp, salt, and a slight sour twist. I love them.

My husband loves French fries, so we always start off with an order of fries. They are crisp, hand cut, and not heavy with grease. The orders are small, and a nice appetizer for one.

savory.pngI also enjoy the savory Asiago Beignets.  They are bite-sized pillows of creamy dough and cheese fried for a light crisp. YUM!

Their Seattle Sourdough Flatbread with House made Hummus is a treat. The warm fresh bread against the cool flavorful hummus is superb.

The Wild Salmon & Chips with hand-cut fries is my teenage daughter’s favorite. The crispy breading on the local caught frigid water salmon is unusual and just right.  Again, those fries are worth having again! Note that the portion size on this dish is very large.

I LOVE the Salmon, Duxellesi and Asiago Cream Sauce with Sourdough Homemade Pasta.  This dish has complex and comforting flavors that both wake you up and make you smile.  I love a twist of lemon over the salmon.  Like heat? Add a few red pepper flakes and give it some zing!  You won’t go wrong with this dish.

Their Sourdough Mac and 4 Cheeses is mouthwatering.  I wasn’t sure how I would like sourdough pasta, but once you try it with the tangy cheese you will be craving it later.  You can also purchase their pasta to take home!

Homemade Feisty Italian Meatballs with Sourdough Pasta is a favorite of our meatball loving friends. Moist but held together perfectly, the meatballs are great and the zesty sauce is an Italian delight.

Unusual but Amazing Dish – 20 Ingredient Curry Pizza.  This personal flatbread pizza can be made vegetarian, which we did, is loaded with a sauce made of lime juice, coconut juice and fresh cilantro. Topped with yellow squash, red fresnos, cauliflower, zucchini, carrot, lemongrass, garlic, mozzarella, shallots, galangal, coriander, kaffir lime peel, cumin, mace, turmeric and cardamom.  (And yes, I did notice the spelling error on their menu. It was difficult for me to not mention to them.)  The pizza is so unusual and tasty.  I wanted to keep eating it, even though it was my husband’s dish.  It is very good and worth trying.  It can be ordered with chicken if you are looking for more protein.

After all that, I didn’t have room to try the sweets.  But I am hoping to return soon to give them a shot.
